Gyms dedicated to one sport are the exception rather than the rule.

Most gymnasiums support multiple sports and non-sporting activities like assemblies, ceremonies, meetings, and concerts. Choosing the right gym floor for multi-use applications can reduce transition time and improve the functionality of a facility.

Overview

To choose an effective sports floor for a multi-use gymnasium requires examining the potential activities of the gym. Each multi-use facility is different and outlining its uses in detail will greatly improve the chances of matching the right gym floor to the right applications. Below are a few questions to guide the process of defining the needs of multi-use gymnasiums.

What are the most common activities that will occur in the gymnasium?

Transitioning from basketball to volleyball is very different than transitioning from sports to non-sporting events, such as school assemblies or concerts that require tables, chairs, and other equipment. If the gymnasium is to be used for more than sports, it is important to consider whether a protective covering is required. If a covering is necessary, consider if there is adequate storage space available for the material.

How much time is available to transition between activities?

Depending on the circumstances, a gym may be required to switch between activities quickly. In this case, consider what time investment will be required in switching to a different sport or event. Some gym flooring options can be prepared in less time than others.

For non-sporting events, what other furnishings or equipment will be used?

It is ideal to consider gym flooring in conjunction with the furnishings that will be used, such as tables, chairs, and bleachers. Some furnishings can damage certain types of flooring, so, it is important that these two elements of the facility are compatible.
