ASTM F1303: Defining a Wear Layer

When sports flooring representatives mention a “wear layer,” have you ever wondered exactly what that is? Luckily, there’s an ASTM for that. ASTM F1303 is a collection of multiple testing protocols, which are designed to unify vinyl manufacturer’s testing. ASTM F1303 defines a wear layer as “the portion of a resilient floor covering that contains or protects the pattern effect. [It] may be transparent, translucent, or opaque. A background or pattern under the wear layer may be printed with suitably formulated, color stable inks, or otherwise prepared to create a color stable pattern.” Why is this important? When it comes to wear layer warranties, not every manufacturer cites ASTM F1303; some use a non-standard definition, which can affect your comparisons between warranties. To compare “apples to apples,” make sure that ASTM F1303 is used as the standard measure of a wear layer.
